The study abroad tendency has been grown among the Indian students. Not only in the UK, USA or Canada, Indian students are now showing interest in studying in Germany. The number of Indian students in Germany has increased by 15.1% over the past year, according to the latest data from DAAD India, based on information from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office.
The Number of Indian Students in Germany is Breaking all Records
The number of Indian students in Germany has more than doubled in the last five years, with 49,483 currently studying at German universities, based on data from the winter semester 2023/24.
India has now surpassed China as the largest source of international students in Germany, with over 40,000 Chinese students enrolled in German universities.
According to data shared with The PIE News, 60% of Indian students are studying Engineering, 21% are enrolled in Law, Management, and Social Studies, 13% are studying Math and Natural Sciences, and 5% are pursuing courses in Agriculture/Forestry, Humanities, and other fields.
More than half (56%) of these students attend traditional universities, while 44% study at universities of applied sciences, which focus on practical education and research.
Germany is also working to make its job market more appealing to Indians due to a shortage of workers. DAAD president Joybrato Mukherjee noted that Indian students are interested in job opportunities after finishing their studies in Germany.
“It’s a win-win for both India and Germany,” said Mukherjee, as many Indian students come to Germany to earn a degree, learn German, and find work in the country.
During his visit to India in February 2023, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the demand for Indian IT professionals in Germany. In December 2022, Germany and India also signed an agreement to make it easier for citizens to study, work, and do research in each other’s countries.
