The university was founded in 1851 with the foundation of the Derby School of Art. It was part of a broader movement in the 19th century to promote technical and vocational education. The Derby Technical Institute was founded in 1883, focusing on engineering and technical subjects.Â

For the year 2025, the university is offering discounts and scholarships totaling up to £3,000 to international students. Within this £2,000 belongs to the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship and £1,000 is the full payment discount.
To secure a place at the University of Derby in the UK, one has to meet the entry requirements of his desired program.Â
- To secure a place in the International Foundation Year, a student must hold a higher secondary certificate with an average of 60% marks.
- For admission in the undergraduate program, candidates with a minimum of 45% marks in a bachelor’s degree of 2-3 years duration are considered eligible for direct entrance.
- If a student has 45% marks in his 3-4 years bachelor’s degree is considered for entrance to the second year of a bachelor program at the University of Derby.
- For the Postgraduate program, direct entry one needs to have a 4 year Bachelor’s in Engineering/Science. A 2-year master’s degree in professional fields or a Master of Philosophy degree is also acceptable.Â
English Language Requirements
Academic for UKVI IELTS, no less than 2 years old is a must for Derby University. An IELTS score between 6.0 and 7.0 with a pre-requisite minimum score in all areas of speaking, reading, writing, and listening is necessary for admission to the University of Derby. Additionally, a TOEFL iBT Overall score of 79 – 100 and 60 score of PTE is also acceptable.
