  • Malaysia has made some changes to its visa rules with the new Visa Liberalisation Plan.
  • One of the changes is the introduction of a Graduate Pass. This pass lets university graduates and their families stay in Malaysia for up to a year.
  • They can use this time to continue studying, travel, or work part-time. This change is happening because Malaysia wants more international students to come and study here.

Overview of new post-study visa in Malaysia

Starting from December 1, 2023, Malaysia has introduced new visa rules to welcome visitors and students more easily. The Visa Liberalisation Plan includes several changes. Visitors from China and India can now stay for up to 30 days without a visa. Travelers can use a “multiple entry visa” to come and go from Malaysia for stays of up to 30 days each time. Additionally, visitor visas now last for six months instead of three.

The liberalization plan includes a new pass called the Graduate Pass (also known as the Social Visit Pass). This pass lets foreign students who have finished a bachelor’s degree or higher in Malaysia stay there for up to a year after graduation. Students can choose to keep studying, travel, or work part-time during this time.

Why the new post-study visa has been introduced in Malaysia?

These new plans are part of Malaysia’s aim to increase the number of international students to 250,000 by 2025. Reports from the media suggest there were between 130,000 and 170,000 students in 2022.

Education Malaysia doesn’t directly track the total number of international students, but it does give updates every three months about how many new international students have applied. Those updates show that there was an increase of about 18% in the number of applications during the first half of 2023 compared to the same time in 2022.

Because of issues like limits on how many students can enroll, delays in processing visas, and other big changes in countries where English is widely spoken, places like Malaysia and New Zealand are likely to become more popular choices for international students this year.
