The UK parliamentary election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. The new Parliament will meet on Tuesday 9 July 2024 when the business will be the election of the Speaker. The State Opening of Parliament and the King’s Speech will be held on Wednesday 17 July 2024.
Overview of the UK General Election
A general election lets people across the UK choose their Member of Parliament (MP). This MP will speak for a local area (constituency) in the House of Commons for up to five years.
Each constituency has several candidates to choose from. Some candidates represent national political parties. The candidate with the most votes becomes the MP for that area.
The New Prime Minister in the UK
Sir Keir Starmer is the UK’s new Prime Minister after his Labour Party won a huge victory in the general election. The Conservative Party, which had been in power for 14 years with five different prime ministers, experienced a major defeat, losing 250 seats. Rishi Sunak, the outgoing Prime Minister, took responsibility for the loss and apologized to his colleagues in a brief statement outside 10 Downing Street in the rain. He said he would resign as party leader soon.
When was the Result Published by the Parliament?
According to Reuters, “Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged on 5th July 2024 Friday to use his massive electoral majority to rebuild the country, saying he wanted to take the heat out of politics after years of upheaval and strife.”
Standing outside his new office and residence at Number 10 Downing Street, Starmer admitted the scale of the challenge after his party’s landslide victory in a parliamentary election ended 14 years of often tumultuous Conservative government. He said that any improvements would take time, and he would need to first rebuild faith in politics.
